I registered my channel, now what?
Well, now you can:
- Keep your channel even when your offline
- Have final say over who gets ops and voice in your channel and who
doesn't
- Have ChanServ kick certain people from the channel
- Have ChanServ display an on-join notice to people
- Have ChanServ display the URL to your channel's website
- Have ChanServ do lots of other nifty things
Ok, now how do I do all of that?
Well, Let's take it from the top.
When your channel is registered, You can leave it, and ChanServ
will stop people from just going in and automatically owning it. If, however,
you or someone in your channel's access list doesn't go to your channel for
21 days, ChanServ will consider it abandoned, and will stop managing it.
After this happens, anyone who wants to can register it and they will now own
it.
Ok, so I have to show up once in a while. How about the
OPing bit?
Well, now we get into the Access list. The Access list
gives you a lot of control over your channel. You can add people on the
following levels:
- VOP - Add someone to your channels AutoVoice list.
- HOP - HalfOp list.
- AOP - AutoOp list
- SOP - SuperOp list
- SUCCESSOR - Channel owner "next-of-kin"
- FOUNDER - This is you - the channel Founder.
To explain:
- VOP - Level 3 -
This is your AutoVoice list. People on this list will be
automatically voiced (+v) when they join the channel. This puts a
+ in front of their nick. This is useful as either a gesture of respect
to the user, or to allow them to speak if you set your channel Moderated
(+m), which means only voiced or opped users may speak.
- HOP - Level 4 -
This is your HalfOp (helper) list. People on this list will be
automatically HalfOpped (+h) when they join the channel. They may
give others +v
only, and can only -v users.
- AOP - Level 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 -
This is your AutoOp list. People on this list will be automatically
opped (+o) when they join the channel. They may give others +v
and
+h and +o, and can -v or -h anyone, but may
only -o other AOPs, as long as those AOPs are ranked LOWER.
Note also that, for example, a level 8 actually outranks a level 7 or lower.
- SOP - Level 10+ -
This is your SuperOp list. People on this list will be automatically
opped (+o) when they join the channel. They may give others +v
and
+h and +o, and can -v or -h or -o
anyone but the Successor and Founder. SOPs may manipulate the VOP,
HOP
and AOP lists. Again, higher levels outrank lower levels.
- SUCCESSOR - Level 99 - These people should be
added via two methods. One is to
/chanserv set <channel> SUCCESSOR <nick>.
The other is to also add then to the Access list.
- FOUNDER - Level 9999 - This
is you.
Please see the ChanServ help, under
Access Lists
for more information on how this structure works.
Conclusion:
Well, now you know the basics of owning and using your own
channel. If you need more help, ChanServ has this same information and more
online in it's help files (/ChanServ HELP), and you
can always ask questions in #JetIRC or #Help. For online help with
